Guadalupe Urbina is President of the Voz Propia Foundation. Their central mission is to create, preserve and present socially relevant artistic and ecological projects which touch the hearts of humanity. The focus of the organization since it was founded in 1999 has been to work with children in music, theatre and artistic creations; to help the people of Costa Rica appreciate their identity and value through music and theatre productions; to focus on projects which address important social issues.
Guadalupe Urbina was born in the western Guanacaste province on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, the youngest of ten children in a rural household. Her upbringing gave her a deep appreciation for the natural environment and respect for her local culture.
She has gained an important place in Costa Rica's musical environment, and has acquired recognition for the quality of her work throughout Latin America and Europe. Her songs consist of music and poetry. She compiles, investigates and interprets melodies and anonymous poems.
Guadalupe creates new songs finding her inspiration in the roots of her hometown and her MesoAmerican history. She also puts music to the words and poems of great American authors.
She has created a series of paintings with pre-columbian reminiscences that are inspired by her ethnic roots. These are the foundation of a future programs she is working on through Voz Propia which will address issues of cultural identity and environmental sustainability.
