The Guanared is a movement of artists and cultural leaders founded by Guadalupe Urbina from the province of Guanacaste in the north of Costa Rica. The movement brings together, directly, about 50 people from eleven cantons of the province since the end of 2006.

The most visible of Guanared guanacastecas penas (cultural events) are being conducted once a month in 7 of the cantons in Guanacaste (Liberia, Tilarán, Abangares, Hojancha, Nandayure, Nicoya and Carrillo).

These penas are spaces of expression and artistic encounters between artists, and for local audiences. Usually there are all kinds of music genres, especially youth and leading guanacasteco folk, poetry and short stories.

The Guanared has a coordination team which links, encourages and carries out other projects related to training and institutional strengthening.

The network is coordinating actions with the Regional Bureau of Culture and various agencies of the province.

Fundacion Voz Propia seeks to provide opportunities and improve the lives of socially challenged children. Children from different communities create artistic productions that increase self esteem and give these children a sense of mastery which helps them work to overcome the socially challenging circumstances in their lifes. Voz Propia encourage children to work for a fair world that encourages peace, diversity, civil rights, an appreciation for their heritage and the natural world.

OUR MISSION

  1. To use art and a culture for peace and social transformation for socially challenged children.

  2. To strengthen the historical identity, art and culture of communities; and strengthen their ties with Mesoamerican culture and the world under a spirit of peace, solidarity and cooperation.

  3. To promote the values of the organization and the work of the children through festivals, producing works of art, concerts, exhibitions, forums or meetings.

Voz Propia is a non profit organization and accepts contributions and in-kind donations to support its projects.  In doing this we are responsible to our funders by creating projects that not only help participants, but are also easy to repeat and can be easily adopted in other art programs for children. Our projects have consistently been sustainable in that our students continue the work with the next generation of children throughout Guanacaste.
